* Respect is Rule #1 *
This is a community of mutual respect. Every person here with worthy of absolute dignity and respect, and is to be treated as such. You will see this reflected throughout all of our rules. We have tried to set a standard that will keep everyone feeling safe and comfortable.
Respect each other and hosts as we are all here for support
Strong language and vulgarity are prohibited. Use a similar standard of language that you might hear on major network TV, on the radio, or in any other public forum. Please respect that many people find excessive profanity offensive.
No personal insults to others. Teasing, joking, sarcasm or put downs at another person's expense is insulting and will not be tolerated. Sexual, racist, homophobic, religious or any jokes that put down any person or group are not permitted. Please note that racist or homophobic comments are grounds for immediate banning.
If you disagree with another member please do not argue with them. Highlight the member's name and click the "ignore" box that can be found below the members' names list, WITHOUT announcing to the room that you are ignoring that person. Members do not have to defend their reasons for ignoring another person. Hosts are not to be ignored at any time.
We strongly encourage all members to chat in the open room as more support is available and it allows for all members to become involved in helping.
Members have the right to refuse to give out any and all personal information. Extreme caution is advised about giving out email addresses, IM nicknames, names, addresses, phone numbers and other private information.
Please respect that this is an English speaking chat and limit the use of other languages to a word or two so that all chatters can be included in the conversation.
Use of the emoticons is fun but it leaves a lot of interpretation up to the reader. To avoid confusion, please keep their use to a minimum in favor of the written word.
Please do not talk about any members who are not present.
* If You're in Crisis *
We are not equipped to properly help people in crisis. We want to keep you safe by encouraging you to seek professional assistance.
Our chat is a support group only. We are not trained or equipped to be a crisis center. Please contact a crisis center, your personal physician, a hospital emergency room, your local 911 or emergency contact number for professional assistance. If a member is overwrought and continually refuses the suggestions of the chat and/or we cannot talk to them, they may be asked to leave the room to protect the rest of the group.
If you give your personal information to a host or other member (although we discourage this) and later threaten suicide we reserve the right to contact appropriate authorities, however, no guarantee is made that someone will contact emergency personnel for you.
* Nicknames *
You may only select one nickname for chat. When members use the same name each time, people can get to know you better and support you and other members feel more secure that they know who they are speaking with. It also allows the opportunity to form deeper friendships because people come to recognize you.
If you learn that your desired name is already in use, please select another that is distinct from that one. This will help avoid confusion. We follow a first come, first served guideline.
Members cannot select names that end with ADM, HOST, or MOD, nor may they use names made up of only numbers or symbols.
Members cannot select names that are offensive or violent in nature. You may be asked to change names that refer to: death, suicide, self-harm, harm to others, violence, sex, bodily functions, put downs to others, drug or alcohol abuse, religious beliefs, negative political beliefs, hatred or prejudice.
Some members like to use variations upon their chosen nickname to express their feelings. This is acceptable as long as a significant portion of the base nick is preserved and it complies with all of our other rules.
* Miscellaneous *
Triggering topics are allowed, provided members are courteous and respectful to each other's needs. Triggering topics include, by are not limited to,: suicide, self-injury, eating disorders, rape, sexual abuse, drug or alcohol abuse and domestic violence. Although we grant quite a bit of leeway with these topics, hosts do have the right to ask members to take a conversation into PC or to discontinue it. Discussions which involve "how to's" or in any way condone hurting oneself or others will not be allowed under any circumstances. Talking about the emotions that lead to these actions is permitted but talking in details, or using graphic descriptions is never permitted.
People in need of support take the highest priority, so we ask that you offer support, if possible in these situations. Casual conversations should be secondary and respectful of those that need support.
Cybersex and picking up dates is not allowed in this chat. Any instances of attempting to cyber with a minor will result in an immediate permanent ban and any information we have being passed to law enforcement.
Talk pertaining to sex is only permitted if it is within the context of your depression or medication side effects
You may be asked to change topics if a subject is controversial and/or creates disagreements. Please respect that other people's views may not agree with yours.
Members who are impaired by drugs or alcohol will be asked to leave the room until they are sober. Please do not condone the practice of drinking or use of illegal drugs at any time.
Self deprecating remarks, put downs, negative nicknames and a resistance to accepting suggestions to seek professional care or call crisis lines seriously detracts from the room's goal of fostering a positive atmosphere. In an effort to promote a healthier and uplifting atmosphere in our community and to help in healing we ask that you try to recognize the benefits of a more positive attitude. If excess negativity affects the room, the chatter may be asked to leave.
